Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gout Food List & Scanner?

Gout Food List & Scanner is a reference app for looking up how everyday foods fit a low purine diet. Search for a food or browse by level to see whether it is low, moderate, or high in purines, each with a plain-language explanation covering portions, preparation, and the details that matter for gout. You can build a grocery list and use an optional camera scan to check packaged products.

What do the three purine levels mean?

Every food carries one of three levels:

Why doesn't the app show exact milligram numbers?

Published purine measurements vary widely between sources, portions, and cooking methods, so a precise-looking number can be misleading. The app uses level categories instead, with each food's description carrying the practical detail: portion sense, preparation notes, and the related factors (like alcohol and sugary drinks) that matter for gout.

How does the camera scan work?

Point your camera at a packaged product, and the app reads the label and ingredient list, then reports a purine-level verdict with an explanation and flags ingredients worth knowing about (such as organ meats, anchovies, or yeast extract). Scanning is part of the subscription, and every new subscriber starts with a 3-day free trial. The scanner is an educational aid; it does not replace reading the label or your own care plan.

What does the subscription include, and how much is it?

The subscription unlocks unlimited camera scans and the Ask AI feature, which answers typed questions about any food. It is offered as a monthly plan ($4.99 per month) or a yearly plan ($29.99 per year), and each plan starts with a 3-day free trial. You can restore purchases or manage your subscription from the Profile tab.

How do I use the grocery list?

Tap "Add to Grocery List" on a food to save it for shopping, then check items off as you go. Your list is saved on your device between sessions and is managed from the Grocery tab.

Is my privacy protected?

Yes. The app does not require an account and does not collect personal information such as your name or email. The camera scan uses an anonymous session; scan photos are stored on your device, and during a scan the photo is sent to a third-party AI service to generate your result. You can erase your scan history at any time with "Delete My Data" in the Profile tab. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Is this a substitute for medical advice?

No. Gout Food List & Scanner is an educational reference, not a medical device, and it does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Gout management is individual: medication, hydration, weight, and overall diet all matter, and your doctor's guidance comes first. Use the app to make label reading and grocery decisions easier, and talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian about your diet plan.
