Frequently Asked Questions
What is FODMAP Foods & Scanner?
FODMAP Foods & Scanner is a reference app with over 1,000 foods rated by FODMAP level: Low, Moderate, or High. Search for a food, browse by category or by FODMAP subgroup, check the portion guidance on any food, explore low-FODMAP meal ideas, and build a grocery list. An optional camera scan lets you check a meal or a packaged product with your phone.
How are FODMAP levels determined?
Every food is rated Low, Moderate, or High FODMAP. A core set of foods is based on clinically measured, peer-reviewed lab data (Muir 2007 and 2009, Biesiekierski 2011, Yao 2014), classified using the Varney 2017 cutoffs; you can view those sources by tapping "View references" on a food's detail screen. The remaining foods are estimated from established public FODMAP knowledge, and each is clearly marked in the app with a confidence label ("Based on public FODMAP knowledge") and a "View methodology" link. The app is not affiliated with Monash University and does not use Monash data.
Why does a food's FODMAP level change with portion size?
FODMAPs are dose dependent: a food that is low FODMAP in a small serving can become moderate or high in a larger one. Every food has a Portion Guide, and when a food's level shifts with serving size it shows where that happens, so you can find the amount that works for you.
What are the FODMAP subgroups?
Foods can carry one or more of six FODMAP subgroups: Fructans, GOS, Lactose, Excess Fructose, Sorbitol, and Mannitol. A food's detail screen tags the subgroups it contains, and you can browse foods by subgroup from the Foods tab.
What are meal ideas?
The app includes curated low-FODMAP meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, each with its ingredients listed. You can search meals by name or by an ingredient you have on hand, and add a meal's ingredients to your grocery list in one tap.
How do I use the grocery list?
Tap "Add to Grocery List" on any food to save it for your next shopping trip, or add all the ingredients from a meal at once. Check items off as you shop; your list is saved on your device between sessions and is managed from the Grocery tab.
How does the camera scan work?
Point your camera at a plated dish, a whole food, or a packaged product, and the app returns a FODMAP rating with an explanation and subgroup tags. Your first 3 scans are free. After that, unlimited scanning requires a subscription (see below); the rest of the app stays free.
What does the subscription include, and how much is it?
Everything except unlimited scanning is free: the full food list, search, browsing, portion guides, subgroup tags, all meal ideas, and the grocery list, plus your first 3 camera scans. Unlimited scans are available for $29.99 per year. You can restore purchases or manage your subscription from the More tab.
Is my privacy protected?
Yes. The app does not require an account and does not collect personal information such as your name or email. The camera scan uses an anonymous session; scan photos are stored on your device, and during a scan the photo is sent to a third-party AI service to generate your result. You can erase your scan history at any time with "Delete My Data" in the More tab. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Is this medical advice?
No. FODMAP Foods & Scanner is an educational reference, not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for care from a doctor or a registered dietitian. The low-FODMAP diet is designed to be followed temporarily and works best with professional guidance.
