Kosher Food List
Last updated: June 24, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Lion, LLC ("Lion," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and safeguards information when you use the Kosher Food List mobile application (the "App").
By using the App, you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. This Privacy Policy is part of and subject to our Terms of Use.
1. Our Approach to Privacy
Kosher Food List is designed with privacy in mind. The App:
- Does not require an account or login
- Does not collect personal information
- Does not use advertising services
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Data Stored on Your Device
The App stores a small amount of data locally on your device using AsyncStorage (a standard on-device storage mechanism). This includes:
- Your grocery list items and their checked/unchecked state
- App preferences (such as whether you have seen the welcome screen)
- A randomly generated device identifier, used for anonymous usage analytics and (if you use the optional Scan feature) to maintain your free-scan allowance and link your scan history to an anonymous session. This identifier is not your name, email, or any personal identity.
Your grocery list and app preferences never leave your device and are deleted when you uninstall the App.
2.2 Automatically Collected Information
When you use the App, we may automatically collect:
- Device type, operating system, app version
- Usage data (app opens, timestamps)
This data is associated with a randomly generated identifier, not your name, email, or any personal information. It is used solely to operate, maintain, and improve the App.
2.3 Camera and Scan Feature (Optional)
The App includes an optional Scan feature. If, and only if, you choose to use it:
- You take a photo of a food, an ingredient list, or a barcode using your device camera.
- The photo and text derived from it are sent to third-party artificial-intelligence providers (Anthropic and OpenAI) so the App can identify the food and generate kosher-status information.
- If a barcode is detected, the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts (an open product database) to look up the product.
- The resulting scan result (its text, tags, and the food name) is stored on our backend so you can view your scan history. The photo itself is not stored on our servers.
- A copy of the photo is saved locally on your device, in the App's private storage, so you can revisit your scan history within the App. These photos are never uploaded to our servers and are not synced or backed up to other devices.
- You can delete an individual scan, including its on-device photo, from the scan's detail screen. Using "Delete My Data" in the App, or uninstalling the App, removes all locally stored scan photos.
This processing is associated with a randomly assigned anonymous identifier, not your name, email, or other personal identity. Scan data is used only to provide the Scan feature and is never sold. The third-party providers listed in Section 5 process this data under their own privacy policies.
3. How We Use Information
We use collected information to:
- Provide, operate, and improve the App
- Monitor usage patterns to improve user experience
- Comply with legal obligations
4. Information We Do Not Collect
To be clear, we do not collect:
- Names, email addresses, or other personal identifiers
- Personal health records, symptoms, or diagnoses (the App provides general food information; it does not ask you to log your health history)
- Location data
- Advertising IDs
- Microphone or audio input
We access your camera only when you actively use the optional Scan feature (Section 2.3), and we do not store the photos you take.
5. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell your personal data.
We may share information only in the following limited circumstances:
- With service providers who help operate the App (e.g., hosting), under confidentiality obligations
- If required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request
- To protect the rights, safety, or property of Lion, our users, or others
Third-party services we use may include:
- Cloud hosting and backend (Supabase)
- Artificial-intelligence processors for the Scan feature (Anthropic and OpenAI), which receive scanned photos and derived food text to generate results
- Open Food Facts, which receives scanned barcode numbers to look up packaged-product information
These providers process the data only to deliver the Scan feature and under their own privacy policies. We do not sell your data to them or to anyone else.
6. Data Retention
We retain your information only for as long as necessary to:
- Provide the App
- Fulfill the purposes described in this Policy
- Comply with legal and regulatory obligations
You can delete your scan history and associated data at any time within the App using "Delete My Data" (More > Delete My Data), which removes your scan records from our backend and deletes scan photos stored on your device. You may also request deletion by contacting us at the email listed below, subject to applicable legal requirements.
7. Data Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect your information. However, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access the information we hold about you
- Request correction or deletion of your data
- Delete your scan data directly within the App (More > Delete My Data)
- Withdraw consent where applicable
You can exercise these rights by contacting us at the email listed below.
California residents may have additional rights under the CCPA. EU residents may have rights under GDPR. Contact us to exercise these rights.
9. Children's Privacy
The App is intended for users aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we learn such data has been collected, we will delete it promptly.
10. Third-Party Services
The App does not use Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework or access the device's advertising identifier (IDFA).
The App may contain links to external websites (such as our legal pages); those sites are governed by their own privacy policies.
11. International Users
If you access the App from outside the United States, you understand that your information may be processed and stored in the United States or other jurisdictions.
12. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
